MASSASAUGA RATTLESNAKE - Did you know that we have an Endangered Species right here in Mercer County, PA, that's a rattlesnake? The Eastern Massasauga, is an Endangered Species and is found in small populations in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and in Pennsylvania. In fact, Mercer County Pennsylvania (Click to see a picture of one) has a respectable population of Massasauga's. The Massasauga is rare in all of the states mentioned and populations are scattered and small. The name Missasauga comes from a river that flows in Ontario, Canada, where the Massasauga is also considered Endangered. CLEVELAND METROPARKS ZOO - Just a little over an hour and a half away is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo with The Australian Adventure returning the 30th of March. Check it out HERE! How about directions? MAP
PITTSBURGH ZOO & AQUARIUM - Close to home, just a little over an hour away is the gorgeous World Wild Web adventure known as the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. 77 acres of sprawling natural wilderness habitat to explore. And, don't wait till summer, it's open NOW! In fact, open everyday except December 25th! Gates open at 9a till 4p and the park closes at 5p. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 60 and over, $5 for children ages 2 to 13, and those under 24 months are FREE. Parking is $3. DRAKE WELL MUSEUM - Near to our county, in nearby Crawford County, is the site of the first commercial oil well in the world, launching the booming oil industry. The museum presents a full size replica of the engine and derrick over this early oil well, plus outstanding exhibits about Pennsylvania oil country and early industrial in the Oil Creek Valley. The museum may be visited May thru October open Mon thru Sat 9a - 5p & Sun 10a - 5p, November thru April open Tue thru Sat 9a - 5p Sun 12p - 5p Closed on Mon, and also open on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Price is: Adults $4.00, Senior Citizens (60+) $3.50, Youth (6-12) $2.00, Family (one household) $10.00, Children (5 and under) FREE, and Colonel Inc. Members FREE. Trails for Mercer County, PA
SHENANGO WALKING TRAIL - Big Bend Trail - This level walking path begins at an intersection just before a bridge north of Route 62, on Valley Road, where there is parking ample for 20 to 30 cars. The first leg of the journey follows the Shenango River north and east of what was formerly part of the Erie Canal, about 4 miles to New Hamburg. The trail path is gentle and fairly easy to navigate, with a few signs offering landmarks of history. From New Hamburg, the trail continues on to Kidd Mill Covered Bridge, however, this stretch is fairly difficult to voyage and should only be attempted by the experienced hiker. The trail starts accross from road from the Big Bend parking area at the intersection marked Big Bend on this MAP.
TROUT ISLAND TRAIL - PLANNED - This mostly level graveled trail will be under the supervision of the Mercer County Trails Association and will begin near the Mahaney Recreation Area and wind around the Shenango Dam are and then continue through the the Shenango River Reservoir area and will eventually direct a path toward the origin of the reservoir. There will be two Phases for the project including a 2.6 mile and 6 mile extensionss. The trail is being developed by the Mercer County Trails Association and can be contacted at 91 Jefferson Avenue, Sharon, PA 16146 or call 724-342-2520 for a brochure and/or information regarding the trails development.

State Park Reservations Toll Free reservations in Pennsylvania's 116 state parks can be made for campsite, cabin, picnic pavilion or organized group tenting from 7am to 5pm Monday through Saturday up to 2 days through 11 months in advance. Moreover, general park information also is available and costs can be charged for campsites and other facilities. Campsite reservations can be made until noon the day of arrival. Grove City Park - inside the Borough of Grove City offers a swimming pool, numerous picnicking pavilions, walk around duck feeding pond, several fenced in hard surface basketball courts, large playground area with several climbing jungles and swings, numerous baseball and softball fields, walk through flower garden, and many areas to walk. Maurice K Goddard State Park - Located in the northwest corner of the county, and only 5 minutes from I79, this State Park sports an 1,860-acre lake (Lake Wilhelm), becoming an angler's paradise. The large lake, abundant wetlands, old fields and mature forests provide a diversity of habitats that attracts wildlife in all seasons. Sporting Fishing, Picnicking, Hiking, 6 miles of Mountain Biking (12.5 including Creek Road highway as a loop), 1,155 acres of Hunting, Trapping, and dog training during prescribed season, and Cross-Country Skiing, Snowmobiling, and Ice Fishing for winter activities. Oil Creek State Park - Located just outside the county in adjacent Venango County, is an area that contains the site of the world's first commercial oil well (Drake Well), where the story of the early petroleum industry, oil boom towns, oil wells, and early transportation, unfolds. A 9.5-mile paved bicycle trail through the scenic Oil Creek Gorge, or an excursion on the train, reveals several oil sites and the deep hollows, steep hillsides, and wetlands. The Oil Creek Valley is the site of the world's first commercial oil well in Titusville, and throughout the park surfaces the realization of the early life in Pennsylvania. Pymatuning State Park - in nearby Crawford County, this is one of the largest state parks in our Commonwealth. The large lake provides excellent fishing throughout the year and is especially lovely in late spring evenings when the sunset gilds the water and colorful sailboats appear to slide across a lake of gold. Sporting Boating, Hiking, Camping, Picnicking, Swimming, and a host of other recreations, including Cabins, Boat Rentals, Environmental Education, and Natural areas. For directions MAP.
